  1. DARGAVILLE   I have visited Dargaville. The weather was very pleasant on the day i visited - kinda reminded me of Vista, California one of the places in the US with the best climate. Dargaville might be one of those areas that not too many people know about which has a lot to offer in way of great climate and closeness to the Tasman Sea with very nice beaches. It is a small town with all of the basics like a Countdown Supermarket and even a Mitre 10 hardware store and some restaurants. On the beach which is close by (i think about 8 miles away), i did not encounter any biting insects; that may be because of the season - i don't know. Dargaville is located next to the very wide Northern Wairoa River - a river that is quite muddy in my opinion. There is what seems like a lot of flat country around the area good for bicycle riding. Dairy farming is the main local industry. I want to return to Dargaville and spend more time there exploring.

  2. BAYLYS BEACH HOLIDAY PARK   This place is located on the west coast of the northland area - directly across from Whangarei on the east side about 36 miles distance from Whangarei. I have stayed here and i like it a lot. I like the area and the weather was very comfortable for my two day stay. I think i would like to live in the area at sometime in the future. The short road/driveway down to the beach on the Tasman Sea is quite steep in my opinion and hard to walk or ride a bike. And Dargaville is close by (i think 8 miles) so a person can buy groceries.

►Baylys Beach Holiday Park offers accommodation for every type of traveller – whether you are on a family holiday or you are travelling the world with your backpack. This Dargaville holiday complex is situated only a short walk from the spectacular long remote sandy beaches of the west coast of Northland, has freedom quad bike hire on site and the famous Funky Fish Café next door. The local takeaway Sharkies is open 7 days a week. Activities at Baylys Beach include coastal walks, surfing, surf casting, horse trekking, quad-bike riding on the beach and playing a round of golf at the local Northern Wairoa 19-hole golf course. The beach is ideal for 4-wheel drive groups, paragliding, parasailing and land yachting. Or for getting married. Take your pick from fully self-contained cottages to budget cabins and flat grassy camp sites set amongst native coastal trees. We have a large communal kitchen, covered BBQ area and outdoor seating, laundry, high-speed internet and play areas for the kids. The beach is a 5 to 10-minute walk down to one of the jewels of the North and the longest driveable beach in New Zealand, the west coast’s 112km-long Ripiro Beach. Watching the sun set into the sea is one of the delights to experience, and the magical colours of the beach cliffs are a photographer's dream.◄

  3. SAL'S PIZZA   I have not visited this pizza parlor yet located in Auckland, but i sure would like to visit here and buy a large meat pizza. This man at a local grocery store told me about this place and i had to get it on my website as soon as possible. I miss those large pizza's they have in the USA. The next time i am in Auckland i will be sure to try this place out. Their pizza's look good on the internet anyway. Picture on the right is of Sal's Pizza located at 183 Karangahape Rd (K'RD), Auckland, New Zealand (09) 360 7257 (SALS) . . . Located on the right shoulder of the entrance to St. Kevin's Arcade on K'Rd (Auckland's version of the LES). 4. SKY CITY   This is a famous business venture here in New Zealand & Australia with locations in Auckland, Queenstown, Hamilton, Darwin, & Adelaide. Billed as "The center of world-class entertainment with casinos at our heart". This consists of hotels, restaurants, bars, & convention centers, i guess located in one general area.

►SKYCITY Entertainment Group Limited is a leading entertainment and gaming business with a great brand and an iconic status as a New Zealand and Australian listed company. We operate monopoly casinos in New Zealand (Auckland, Hamilton and Queenstown) and Australia (Adelaide and Darwin), alongside a variety of industry-leading restaurants and bars, luxury hotels and convention centers. 5. NZ MOTORCYCLE GANGS   To my surprise, NZ has it's fair share of motorcycle gangs. I mistakenly thought New Zealand was the land of the meek & mild type, but no - NZ is the home of the rough, tough & hard to bluff. I think that the gang members mostly ride Harley-Davidson motorcycles. In the local newspaper they mention that a lot of the gang members earn their living by selling drugs and other criminal activity, i guess that explains why a lot of them are not welcome in some communities. Picture on the right is of a New Zealand gang member.

► From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: There are numerous gangs in New Zealand, of varying criminality, organization and ethnicity. The New Zealand Police have distinguished between "New Zealand gangs", outlaw motorcycle gangs and local street gangs. They named the three most prominent "New Zealand gangs" as Black Power (not related to the African-American movement); the Mongrel Mob, and the Nomads.[1] Examples of local street gangs are the Junior Don Kings (JDK) and Dope Money Sex (DMS) in Central Auckland.[2] According to the book Gangs by Ross Kemp, New Zealand has more gangs per head than any other country in the world,[3] with about seventy major gangs and over 4,000 patched members[4] in a population of 4 million people.
  6. MITRE 10   This is quite a home supply/hardware store. As good or better than the Home Depot in the US. A really beautiful place. Ultra modern. The store in Whangarei is relatively new. This store is massive and has a very large inventory.

►Mitre 10 has been a part of New Zealand’s DIY culture since 1974. Wholly New Zealand owned and operated with around 100 stores from Invercargill to Kaitaia, Mitre 10 is an amazing Kiwi success story. Mitre 10 is more than twice the size of its nearest competitor and continues to grow through both share of market and number of stores. In 2004 Mitre 10 New Zealand Limited opened its first Mitre 10 MEGA store in Hastings and like almost all the MEGA stores it is a local, family owned business. In this case it is owned by the Ricketts family who have been part of Mitre 10 since almost the beginning and were hardware retailers in the Hawkes Bay for many years before joining the Mitre 10 network.
New Zealand Books & Videos NZ Books/Videos
The Mitre 10 MEGA store offers our customers an increased product range and extra services like cafes and play areas for children as well as extensive garden centres and drive through areas for both the trade and retail customers. The hugely successful Mega store network is currently undergoing rapid expansion with an average six stores per year planned or built in the 2010, 2011 and 2012 financial years. To support this expansion we have aggressively expanded our sourcing capabilities in both New Zealand and China, steadily building upon our competitive advantage of great pricing and increased range for our customers. If you find a lower price on an identically stocked product locally we will beat it by 15%. If you find the same product cheaper from another Mitre 10 store or Mitre 10 website we'll match that price. Excludes trade and special quotes, stock liquidations and commercial quantities. The in-store price may be lower than that advertised. The Mitre 10 brand is part of the DNA of New Zealand DIY with many customers having grown up with the brand originally launched in New Zealand in 1974. Mitre 10 is a trusted part of the hardware retail landscape and has twice been voted New Zealand’s most trusted home improvement store. That trust comes from knowing Mitre 10 is a completely independent New Zealand owned and operated co-operative that plays a valuable role in the communities in which we operate. Mitre 10 is involved in many uniquely New Zealand projects, such as the Takahe Rescue project, Plunket, the Neurological Foundation and many individual projects supported by our local stores to help their local the communities.◄

  7. BURGER FUEL   Here's another popular fast food franchise available here in NZ. These people have quite a website. "Engineering the Ultimate Burger". They have "Kids Meals", Ice Cream, Plus regular adult food. Also, they take phone orders at their individual stores. And they have a "Vegan and Vegetarian" burger as well. Picture on the right is of "Buster Burger". This crazy guy aka the "Buster Burger", will be cruising around New Zealand this summer. Make sure you keep an eye out for him and hit him up for free goodies and multiple high fives. Likewise, if you see the girls in the BurgerFuel Mini Car, make sure you Instagram them for your chance to win free stuff. Awesome!

►Back in '95 at the bottom of the world on a crazy, beautiful, pristinely un-spoiled tough little island, two in fact, North and South Island, (took a while to come up with those names) called New Zealand we felt it was time to give the dirty old Burger an old fashioned Kiwi makeover, and start moving the world's favorite "food vice" to the healthier side of life. Not to mention giving those big old multi-national boys a bit of a shake-up. What emerged from months of testing, measuring, stealing ingredients and eating thousands of prototypes was the BurgerFuel Burger. A burger that, while juicy, succulent and tasty (all the stuff we love about burgers), has real NZ made ingredients incorporated into its DNA, made and assembled by a crew with a dogged determination to keep on sourcing better, healthier, whole food and organic products whilst wrapping and presenting them in packaging that is sustainable and good for the planet all colliding to "Engineer the Ultimate Burger". Hey, because life's too short to eat bad Burgers.◄

  9. KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN   There are a lot of KFC restaurants around NZ. The menu is slightly different than in the USA, but still quite tasty. Most restaurant businesses in NZ do not make "gravy" the same as in the US, i mean the kind of gravy that is usually poured on mashed potatoes. KFC here is the closest you will find to USA type gravy.

►With a character like Colonel Sanders at the helm, it's not surprising that KFC has grown to become one of the world's most loved food brands. In 1939, he perfected his Original Recipe® Chicken and by 1964 people all across the United States and Canada were enjoying his unique chicken recipe. Then just seven years later, KFC arrived on the New Zealand shores with a store in Auckland. Fast-forward 40 years and much has changed, however one thing has stood the test of time – the Colonel's Original Recipe® Chicken. In fact, thanks to the popularity of his 11 secret herbs and spices, KFC now has 97 stores nationwide. But there's much more to KFC and the Colonel, which you'll discover when you read The KFC Story, Milestones and Our Great Taste. You can also learn more about KFC locally by checking out News, Stores, and KFC in New Zealand.◄

  10. BÜRGEN BREAD   This is one of the good sliced breads available at the local grocery supermarkets here in NZ and i think this is available in the United Kingdom and Australia as well. In fact, i think this is a NZ based business, so it has a following. This bread is loaded with all kinds of grains and stuff. It is made with 'High Fiber', No artificial colors or preservatives, & Natural Ingredients. I have a loaf of this to try and it is a heavy bread. I like it for making toast best spread with some good NZ butter & honey. They have a nice website, but the Bürgen Bread UK website is better in my opinion. Their website is interactive and kind of fun. You can determine which of their breads is suitable for your lifestyle by clicking on the 'Slice Of Life' feature.

►Each Bürgen® bread contains different combinations of ingredients that contribute to the recommended daily intake of a variety of important nutrients. Simply by making Bürgen® bread part of your daily lifestyle, you can help manage your intake of these vital nutrients and help your body stay in top shape so you can grab a slice of life every day! 11. JET FIGHTER   Here is an interesting business which i have never heard of anyone doing anywhere, which i think is based at Ardmore airfield, south of Auckland. This business consists of selling adventure aviation flights in military style jet aircraft. At the time of this writing, they have at least 3 categories: INTRODUCTORY MISSION: Designed to get you "up there, turning and burning" in our BAC Strikemaster Mk. 88, the Introductory Mission is a 15 minute adventure joy flight letting you experience first hand the thrill of flight in an ex-military jet fighter. HOT-SHOT MISSION: The Hot-Shot Mission is a 20 minute adventure joy flight structured to extend the length of time you spend "turning and burning" in our BAC Strikemaster Mk. 88. With the same range of manoeuvres experienced in the Introductory Mission, combined with a high speed run up the Hauraki Gulf, you'll experience first hand the thrill of flight in an ex-military jet fighter. STRIKE MISSION: Our most comprehensive flight, the Strike Mission is a 30 minute adventure that includes all the features of the Introductory and Hot-Shot Missions, in addition to some high intensity, low-level valley flying through some of Auckland's most dramatic scenery.

►Become a Top Gun Pilot for a day and fly your very own Jet Fighter Adventure Joy Flight with New Zealand's adventure jet operator. Our Pilots are standing by to escort you on the adventure of a lifetime and they are among the best Jet Fighter Pilots in the country. We own and operate a BAC 167 Strikemaster Mk88 and are proud to be able to offer the public a unique opportunity to experience Adventure Flights in an ex-military fighter jet. We can take passengers with an age range from 16 to 88 years. 12. NEW ZEALAND TRAMPER   The website i have listed here is very useful in my opinion for those of you interested in walking and hiking around NZ. It is actually designed to serve a "community" of trampers/hikers/walkers and you need to register in order to get the full benefit of the website. There is a lot of interesting and useful information here. Members can share their trips they have made, they have a directory of 'Track' areas, places where you can hike, a forum for member participation with subject matter including: Food, tramping partners, gear talk, buy/sell, routes & huts, etc., another link lists huts & campsites available for use, record of 'tracks' by Tramper members, plus safety information for tramping trips. There are also lots of nice pictures on this site depicting areas for tramping and camping. Picture on the right is of the "Pororari River" located in the "Paparoa National Park".

  13. KIM DOT COM   I do not understand what is behind the controversy with Kim Dot Com, but he does get a lot of international exposure. I think the problem has something to do with his former website "Megaupload" which i think allowed people to upload and store files similar in operation to "" or "". I guess people used his site to upload copyrighted music or video material for public sharing. Click on the picture at the right to go to Kim Dot Com's latest new website named "Mega"

  14. COUNTDOWN SUPERMARKET   This is another large NZ supermarket (Grocery Store) chain, one where i also shop. These people are a competitor to New World supermarkets, i am sure. As far as i can tell Countdown supermarkets are located all over New Zealand. Also, another feature about Countdown which a lot of people do not know about is that you can shop "Online" using their website. After you have completed shopping online you have two options: Your grocery order can either be delivered to your street address or they will hold the groceries for pick-up by you. They have a ton of stuff on their website including a recipe section, members section and other stuff. Click on the picture at the right to get a free sample view of the inside of one of the stores.

►Countdown is New Zealand's leading supermarket brand, serving more than 2.5 million customers every week. We're committed to providing our customers with choice, value and convenience, so they'll enjoy the best overall shopping experience. Our 160 supermarkets across New Zealand are supported by over 18,000 team members. This team delivers our customers a choice of more than 20,000 different products in each of our stores. Behind the scenes, our in-store teams are supported by four dry grocery distribution centres, three fresh produce distribution centres, two meat processing plants, one seafood processing plant and a central support office. Moving products from these hubs to our stores means our drivers have to travel more than 17 million kilometres per year, making over 250,000 deliveries to keep our stores stocked. While we're known as Countdown, we form part of Progressive Enterprises, a subsidiary of the publicly-listed Australian company, Woolworths Limited. In addition to Countdown, Progressive Enterprises is also the franchise co-ordinator for the Fresh Choice and SuperValue banner groups.◄

  15. MOSQUITOES IN NZ   I can only write about my own experience. I have lived for a couple of months around Auckland and never encountered any mosquitoes while living there. I have since moved up north to where it is even greener and warmer weather and into what would appear to be prime mosquito territory because of all the dampness and grasses and other types of vegetation which would breed a lot of mosquitoes normally in the US, but i have not encountered any mosquitoes, even during a hike into the local mountains which was heavy with green plants and tiny streams of water - still no mosquitoes. I do not understand what is different. I was raised for 13 years in the state of Oregon, USA and mosquitoes were quite plentiful especially in the rural areas. If you got near like the Clackamas River the mosquitoes were so bad it was miserable. But here in NZ according to the internet, the mosquitoes seem to exist only in certain areas or pockets around NZ. While living here in Whangarei i have maybe encountered possibly one mosquito in my cabin, but not really sure it was a mosquito. I visited Dargaville to the west of here about 36 miles and never encountered any mosquitoes either. I will update this listing as time goes on and tell about any mosquitoes i may encounter.
  16. NEW WORLD SUPERMARKET   This is one of NZ largest and bestest grocery supermarket chain stores. I shop here. It's a good place to shop. The employees are great. And they have lots of good food for sale. Plus, they sell petrol/gasoline at most of their stores. Their website is very good with lots of useful information. Included are links to Recipes, Wine & Beer, & Promotional Savings. Picture on the right shows how many stores are located across NZ. It looks like they have the whole country covered. 17. THE COFFEE GUY®   I have seen this business around Whangarei. It was a Coffee Guy van. That's how i found this business while the driver was making a right turn and heading east and i wrote down the name on the side of the van. This might be a business or job opportunity for some of you. They are a franchise business, so that means you could make your own job, maybe.

  18. TRADEME   This is really a good service to NZ. I am a member of trademe and have listed items for sale. I like it better than using eBay, it is a lot simpler to use, not as complex. You can use your NZ bank account to pay for items you have won or to receive payment for something you have sold. You just send the other party your bank routing number and checking account number to get paid. Works great.

►In 1999, young computer consultant Sam Morgan founded Trade Me. It was a novel concept: People sending money to sellers they've never met, for goods they've never seen. Fed up with other websites that offered poor usability and didn't cater well to Kiwis, Sam single-handedly built the site and ran it out of his small Wellington flat. Within two days, the site had twenty registered users. By Trade Me's 3rd birthday, registered users had increased to 75,000, placing Trade Me as one of the best performers in the New Zealand online industry. Two new sites had joined the Trade Me family: Find Someone in 2001, and Old Friends in 2002. In 2003, "Trade Me Motors" was launched by auctioning a Mini Cooper for $1 reserve. "Trade Me Property" followed in 2005, and "Trade Me Jobs" in 2006. By this time, Trade Me had over 1.2 million registered users, over 2.5 million auctions listed per month, and was awarded the Deloitte Fast 50 title for fastest growing New Zealand company. Fairfax acquired Trade Me in 2006. In the last few years, Trade Me has continued to innovate, launching the Travelbug accommodation website, New Cars, NZ's first carbon credits trading market, and acquiring Holiday Houses and Vianet. Today, Trade Me has a staggering 2.5 million registered users and 5.5 million auctions listed per month (and growing!). Our headquarters are located on Wellington's beautiful waterfront, with regional offices in Auckland and Christchurch. Keen to join our team? We offer a fun, vibrant work environment with a uniquely Kiwi culture. Check out our current vacancies and what it's like to work here.◄

  19. ALL BLACKS   This listing here is for the famous NZ rugby team called the "All Blacks". They have a nice website and a number of YouTube videos if you would like to see some action on the field.

►With a history extending back almost 130 years, New Zealand's national rugby team, the All Blacks, are the most successful international rugby team of all time and one of the most successful teams in world sport, with a winning Test record of more than 75 percent. The All Blacks are the current Rugby World Cup Champions having beaten France 8-7 in a pulsating Rugby World Cup 2011 Final at Eden Park, Auckland and were recognised as IRB Team of the Year in 2011. This was the second time they have won the coveted Webb Ellis Cup. In 2012, the All Blacks continued their winning record, beating Ireland in the three-Test Steinlager Series and defeating Australia, Argentina and South Africa in the new Investec Rugby Championship.◄

  20. PAK'N SAVE   Pak'nSave is like what could be called a large warehouse type grocery store or supermarket. Lots of bulk food for sale to the general public. Lots of people shop here. They have a nice website and also post 'Specials' or Promotions on their website. They also have a lot of recipes on their site. It might be similar to the US's Costco. Maybe not quite as big. I include this listing here to make you aware of it's existence throughout all of NZ in both the lower (South) & upper (North) islands.

  21. BURGER KING   I like Burger King here in NZ, in fact i like them better than McDonald's. But anyway they have pretty good coverage here in NZ. They also offer "Free Drink Refills", a lot of restaurants here in NZ do not offer free refills on drinks. I like their milkshakes a lot, and their small hamburgers. Some of their menu items include the following:
NEW Mexican WHOPPER, Chicken Wraps, Chicken Skewers, WHOPPER®, Breakfast, Half Price Breakfast, King of the Day, The King's Collection, Chicken Classics, Beef Classics, Dinner Bundles, Flaming Great Value, BK Shots and Snack Packs, Kids Menu, & Lite Options. Picture on the right shows most of the BK's® locations across NZ. Click on the picture at the right to download current discount coupons.

  23. TWO DEGREES MOBILE   Picture on the right is of my 2degrees cell phone & broadband service provider (store) located in downtown Whangarei. I like the service, especially their mobile broadband plan which works very well for me and is very reasonably priced. I use their mobile broadband service for working on my websites to FTP my files up & down my server located in the US. Plus i have their cell phone plan, which seems to work pretty good, and customer service seems to be very good also. No complaints yet. Click on picture at the right for a larger view. Funny to me, the CEO is an American!

►2degrees arrived on the scene in 2009, determined to give Kiwis the mobile phone company they deserved. We built a brand new mobile network that spanned the country and employed hundreds of Kiwi's to deliver a Kiwi service. Then, with simple products and fair pricing we changed the mobile market for good.

For the first time in living memory New Zealanders were set free, to communicate with everyone, for less, and stay close to the ones they loved and cared about. 2degrees of closeness, not 6 degrees of separation. It was more than just our name, it was our brand, what we stood for then, and what we stand for today. Our Prepaid, Pay Monthly, Business and Mobile Broadband products and services continue to serve and liberate all Kiwi's, or Aotearoians as we fondly call them, on a daily basis. And two years on, hundreds of thousands of Kiwis live a 2degrees better life. Not content to rest on our laurels, we strive to be 2degrees smarter every day. Making our products and services fairer, smarter and ultimately allowing all of us to live in a world that is simply, 2degrees better.   ~The team at 2degrees.◄

  24. NZ MCDONALDS   Today i am going to talk about my experience with New Zealand food, specifically NZ McDonald's restaurant food. McDonald's restaurants are all over NZ as far as i can tell, but their menus have been altered to suit the Kiwi taste in food. Before i came to NZ i was totally unaware of the radical difference between American food and NZ food. I assumed it would be pretty close to US flavors or maybe better. Wow, was i in for a culture shock. New Zealanders use ingredients in their foods that i would not in my wildest imagination even consider using.
Their food combinations are beyond anything imaginable in my opinion. Do i like it? No! I do not understand it: A person could go to the country of Mexico and sample most or all of their foods there and it would be hard for me to believe they would not like it. I have never ate any Mexican food which i did not like. You could probably say the same for other countries of the world, except i just learned that Switzerland food is kind of bland, but i have never tasted it, so i cannot say if i like it. My opinion is that there are lots of good quality food items here in NZ, you have to be selective and put together a meal that tastes good to you. I simply cannot afford to go out to a restaurant, spend good money on a breakfast let's say, and order an expensive 3 egg mushroom & cheese omelet only to discover they have put vinegar on the omelet and totally ruined the food and my breakfast. Some of the items on the menu's are really good tasting, but i do not want to spend the money on trial and error meals to find which i can eat, plus i have to keep track of what i like and don't like; so i just gave up eating out except to McDonald's or Burger King. When i buy "The Mighty Angus" burger at McDonald's i always ask them to leave out the "onion relish sauce" and then the sandwich tastes very good, like a very high quality hamburger.
